Severe winter weather continues to adversely affect port and inland transport activities across extensive areas of Northern and Western Europe. Snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures are impacting all primary modes of transportation - including trucking, rail, and barge - leading to delays and interruptions at terminals and depots.

Ongoing winter conditions have resulted in:

  • Delays and service interruptions at terminals and depots
  • Traffic jams and road closures on major roads and highways
  • Reduced availability of handling slots
  • Weather-related congestion throughout the supply chain

These disruptions are affecting all significant ports along the northern and western ranges and are expected to persist over the coming days.

Hapag-Lloyd has provided the following updates regarding operational challenges at German ports:

Hamburg

  • Eurogate: All terminal operations (both waterside and landside) have been completely suspended since Saturday morning, January 3rd.
  • CTA (HHLA): Terminal operations (waterside and landside) ceased Saturday morning, January 3rd. Waterside operations have since resumed but remain significantly slowed. Rail and truck services have also resumed at reduced speeds.
  • CTT (HHLA): Rail and truck movements continue to be suspended since Saturday morning, while waterside operations are active but progressing slowly.

Wilhelmshaven

  • Eurogate: Cargo operations are encountering minor disruptions; however, full shutdowns have not occurred.

Bremerhaven

  • Eurogate and NTB Bremerhaven: Both report minor disruptions to cargo activities, with no full suspension of operations.

At Rotterdam's ECT Delta, all operations have been halted until further notice, with truck drivers advised to avoid approaching the terminal.

To date, the Port of Antwerp has not reported any significant operational constraints

Snow and icy weather are expected to persist in the coming days, leading to ongoing delays, interruptions, and operational constraints. Consequently, scheduled loading and unloading appointments and closing times may not be met as planned.
