Nationwide in Belgium, trade unions have called a day of action on 12 May 2026 as part of ongoing opposition to federal socio-economic reforms.
The mobilisation has been organised by the country’s three main union confederations: FGTB/ABVV, CSC/ACV, and CGSLB/ACLVB.
The demonstration targets government measures affecting pension systems, working conditions, and purchasing power.
While unions describe the event as a national demonstration, it has also been reported as a national strike, though the exact scope of service disruptions remains unclear.
Participants in the demonstration will be eligible for strike pay despite the event not being formally classified as a general strike.
Ahead of 12 May, several sectors have already indicated that operations may be affected, although detailed information on impacted services has not yet been confirmed.
Separately, the CGSP-Cheminots union has announced a 24-hour strike at SNCB, Belgium’s national railway operator, scheduled for 13 May 2026. This action is also linked to opposition against federal pension reforms.
The planned rail stoppage is expected to disrupt services across the national network. Further details regarding the extent of these disruptions have not been specified.
