Transport unions and employers in Italy failed to reach an agreement despite six months of contract negotiations.
Both parties remain divided on the conditions of the talks.
As a result, trade unions Uiltrasporti and Fit Cisl, Filt Cgil and Fit Cisl have called for strikes at the ports next week. The strikes are expected to impact all ports in the country.
According to the media, members of the union Uiltrasporti, representing workers across Italy's transport sector, will go on strike on 2 and 3 July. The union has also chosen to carry out protest initiatives with territorial demonstrations from 1 to 7 July.
"After more than six months of negotiations, we are still far from being able to give concrete answers to the essential needs of Italian dockers," says Uiltrasporti in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Italian Federations of Transport Workers, Filt Cgil and Fit Cisl, have called for a 48-hour strike in the entire port sector on 4 and 5 July.
The unions demand a new collective labour agreement that includes an economic increase to recover the purchasing power lost by workers.
The unions hope for an improved proposal from the employers' associations before the strike dates to resume negotiations.
