The Italian rail network will undergo essential construction and maintenance work aimed at improving rail infrastructure. Several significant railway line interruptions will impact freight transportation across various routes until December 2025.
According to service providers, the following closures are expected:
Trains to/from Gioia Tauro – Bologna
- 22 April to 31 May: Closure of the Taranto–Metaponto line. All trains to/from Gioia Tauro–Bologna will be rerouted via the Tyrrhenian line, resulting in reduced capacity. The situation is worsened by additional construction (since mid-May) in the Rome area, which also affects the Tyrrhenian line and causes significant freight train cancellations.
- 14 - 15 June: Sibari interruption. During this period, no trains to/from Gioia Tauro–Bologna will be able to transit.
- 1 July to 31 August: Bari–Bellavista interruption. All Bologna–Gioia Tauro trains will be rerouted via Cassino–Orte–Falconara, reducing operational capacity. An alternative route is being evaluated, which could improve performance.
- 25 July (11:30 PM) to 27 July (11:00 AM): Total interruption of trains to/from Gioia Tauro due to work at the San Ferdinando terminal.
Trains to/from Padau (All ports)
- 7- 9 June: Closure of the Bologna–Padua line. All trains to/from Padua will be rerouted via Milan, increasing travel time.
