Significant closures and restrictions will affect rail services at Genoa VTE port due to essential civil works on the rail network.

According to Danish carrier Maersk, these disruptions started on 2 January, as follows:

• From 00:00 on Thursday, 2 January, to 04:00 on Tuesday, 7 January

• From 00:00 on Saturday, 11 January, to 24:00 on Sunday, 12 January

Maersk further reports that all trains to and from Genoa VTE will be cancelled during the mentioned period.

Additionally, the usual routing to and from Vado via Genova will be suspended.

Due to these constraints, potential rail service delays and disruptions are expected. Trucking services will continue to operate as usual.

Civil works interrupt rail freight starting May 2025

The Italian Infrastructure Authority (RFI) will conduct multiple civil works throughout 2025 that will impact the country’s rail networks.

Starting May this year, the infrastructure works are expected to impact cargo rail connectivity with some of Italy’s ports, including Genoa, La Spezia and Venice.

Local agencies report that train operations to and from Genoa PSA/IMT will be suspended from 17 May to 15 June.

Similarly, trains from and to Milano Segrate will be interrupted from 9 to 24 August, impacting connections to La Spezia Port.

From 29 September to 14 December 2025, the Bologna – Firenze line will be closed, restricting access to La Spezia and Leghorn port from Padova, Modena and Bologna.

Other lines, namely Milano – Bologna, Verona – Vicenza, Milano – Brescia – Venezia, and Milano – Genova, will be closed from 11 to 17 August.
