Portugal's maritime pilots to stage four strikes in November

The first two-day strike will occur from 6 to 8 November and will involve complete work stoppage at all Portuguese ports

Two unions representing maritime pilots in Portugal issued a statement announcing a series of strikes this month.

The Workers Union of Maringa Trade (SINCOMAR) and the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (FECTRANS) said maritime pilots will halt their operations at all ports across the country on four dates in November. Here is a list of the planned dates:

  • From 7:00 am on 6 November to 7:00 am on 8 November
  • From 7:00 am on 14 November to 7:00 am on 16 November
  • From 7:00 am on 22 November to 7:00 am on 24 November
  • From 7:00 am on 29 November to 7:00 am on 30 November

According to their statement (Portuguese), the unions demand assurances that their retirement age will remain at 60 years. They also call on employers to recognise "the risky and especially painful and exhausting nature of the professional activities carried out by technical pilotage personnel."

The statement adds that the strike will include "complete work stoppage on the first day of each period and may involve a port manoeuvre with a ship carrying perishable goods on the second day."

Disruption to port operations and vessel delays are expected during the strike.
