The Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) has called a 24-hour nationwide strike across Italy’s port sector on 28 September 2026.

The strike has been called on a nationwide basis across Italy's port sector and may affect operations at ports throughout the country, although the level of disruption will depend on local participation and specific arrangements communicated at individual ports.

USB said the action is intended to support recognition of port work as arduous labour for pension purposes and to secure the convening of a technical committee at the Ministry of Labour.

The union also stated its opposition to proposed changes to port legislation and to the use of temporary employment agencies for port operations. In addition, it called for urgent measures to support workers’ wages and purchasing power.

Terminal operators have warned that the impact of the strike remains uncertain. At the PSA SECH terminal in the Port of Genoa, the stoppage is expected to run from 00:30 on 28 September until 00:29 on 29 September.

A similar impact has been announced by the PSA Genova PRA terminal. 

Separately, other labour unions, including the CSLE union and FI-SI, have called a general strike across Italy on 2 October.

Railway staff are scheduled to stop work between 11:00 and 14:00. The action is expected to cause significant disruption to rail services, road traffic and public life.

Higher security measures are anticipated, and violent clashes between protesters and security forces remain possible.
