One person was killed, and six others were injured following an explosion at a petroleum products storage facility operated by Gunvor Energy in the Port of Rotterdam on Thursday.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 local time during maintenance work on one of the company’s storage tanks.

Rotterdam police confirmed that an explosion had taken place in the Europoort area of the port. Operations at container terminals were not affected by the incident.

Authorities continue the investigation and will provide further communication regarding the case.

A separate power outage incident occurred earlier in the day at the port that led to systems shutting down at the Esso refinery, while a transformer substation caught fire.

Authorities, however, confirmed that the explosion was unrelated to the power outage.

Port representatives said LNG terminals were not affected by the blast. Shell also confirmed that its operations at the port were unaffected.
