Operations at the Darsena Terminal in Livorno, Italy, were suspended after a fatal incident involving a port pilot.
The accident occurred yesterday near the entrance to the port when the pilot boat overturned following a collision with another vessel.
The pilot, confirmed by the local port authority as a member of the Livorno pilotage service, was recovered from the water without signs of life.
Trade unions have reacted strongly to the incident. One organisation noted that this was the second work‑related fatality in the city within a month and called for clarity on the circumstances of the event.
It also urged a comprehensive review of safety procedures once the causes have been determined.
Separately, the USB union announced an immediate 24‑hour strike for all maritime and port personnel on Tuesday, 24 February.
At the time, the terminal confirmed that only the acceptance and release of full containers would proceed while all other operations were halted.
As a result of the accident and the subsequent industrial action, activity at the Darsena Terminal is significantly constrained.
Disruptions are expected throughout the day as both the investigation into the accident and the strike continue to affect the port’s functioning.
