Update - 13 May: Italy strike escalation extends disruption risk from ports to inland transport

Update: 13.05.2026

A further escalation of labour action has been announced in Italy, with the USB union calling a nationwide strike involving rail and highway workers from 21:00 on 17 May until 20:59 on 18 May, local time.

Kuehne+Nagel reports that this action may impact intermodal connections, with potential disruption expected at container terminals PSA SECH and PSA Genoa Prà terminals in Genoa Port, as well as at the TMT terminal in the Port of Trieste.

This development follows earlier disruption at the Port of Genoa and an earlier strike action called by the USB union, which led to a full suspension of port operations at key Italian gateways.

Update: 06.05.2026

After a series of assemblies at the Port of Genoa, operations at the port and other ports in Italy may still face disruption due to a labour strike.

The local union organisation, USB, representing maritime and port workers, have called for a national strike on 7 May.

According to the available information, the impacted ports include GenoaGioia Tauro and Livorno.

As a result, all operations will be suspended during the strike, with a likely impact on the following container terminals in particular:

  • Terminal PSA GP (Genoa)
  • Terminal SECH (Genoa)
  • Terminal Bettolo (Genoa)
  • Terminal MCT (Gioia Tauro)
  • Terminal LORENZINI (Livorno)
  • Terminal TDT (Livorno)

The Port of Genoa, Italy, is expected to face temporary operational limitations across multiple port terminals on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.

Kuehne+Nagel reports that assemblies are planned during the morning and early afternoon and could affect terminal activities during the specified time windows.

The assemblies will be held at the following terminals between 09:00 to 14:00 local time:

  • PSA Sech Terminal
  • Bettolo Terminal
  • Bettolo Terminal
  • Messina Terminal
  • San Giorgio Terminal

At PSA Sech Terminal, all operational activities will be suspended between 09:30 and 13:30. The terminal has confirmed that the final time for truck gate entry will be 09:00. Throughout the suspension period, both gate-in and gate-out operations will be unavailable.

Bettolo Terminal will conduct a dockworkers’ assembly. Hence, terminal operations cannot be guaranteed from 09:30 until 13:30, which may affect normal operational continuity during these hours.

At PSA Genoa Prà Terminal, an assembly was called for members of labour unions CGIL, CISL, and UIL. As a result, terminal operations may not be guaranteed from 09:00 to 14:00.

Messina Terminal will hold a members’ assembly scheduled from 09:00 to 13:30. During this period, terminal operations may not be guaranteed.

San Giorgio Terminal is likewise involved, with a trade union assembly scheduled between 09:00 and 13:30. Similar to the other terminals, operations may not be guaranteed during this period.
