Italian truckers plan nationwide stoppage over diesel costs

Road haulage organisations in Italy have announced coordinated protest action in response to elevated fuel costs affecting freight operators across the country.

The initiatives include a planned national stoppage of services and a series of public demonstrations in multiple locations.

Labour union, Trasportiunita, has called for a shutdown of road transport activities from 20 to 25 April. The action follows concerns raised by haulage companies regarding the ongoing cost of diesel fuel on the national network.

Alongside this, Unatras, the unitary coordination body representing the main confederations in the sector, has organised 100 garrisons in an equal number of Italian cities and towns.

If the strike takes place, movement of containerised cargo to and from ports is likely to face severe disruption. Reduced capacities are also expected during the Easter holidays in the country.
