Explosion near Empoli, Italy disrupts Florence–Pisa rail line

Rail traffic halted indefinitely, impacting import and export rail schedules

An explosion in a building adjacent to the railway tracks near the LDS of Empoli and San Romano has caused significant disruptions to the Florence–Pisa rail line.

The incident, which occurred on the night of 29 May 2025, has led to the complete closure of the line to rail traffic to ensure safety and allow intervention by the fire brigade.

Rail traffic is fully interrupted, and there is no estimate for when service will be restored.

This closure affects all trains to and from Livorno and La Spezia that depart from or arrive in Padua, Marzaglia, and Bologna.

As a result of the rail line closure, there will be changes to the connection of export schedules and delays in import deliveries. The inability to transfer all cargo by road will further exacerbate these delays.
