Alarms raised and evacuations ordered for Colombia's Pacific coast

After the sixth-most powerful earthquake struck earlier today, several countries raised tsunami warnings and continue to stay alert.

 

Following a new assessment by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), a State of Alert has been raised for the following coastal regions of Chile:

 

  • Arica and Parinacota
  • Tarapacá
  • Antofagasta
  • Atacama
  • Coquimbo
  • Valparaíso
  • O’Higgins
  • Maule
  • Ñuble
  • Biobío
  • La Araucanía
  • Los Ríos
  • Los Lagos.

 

In addition, a State of Precaution has been raised for the coastal areas of the regions of Aysén and Magallanes, and the Antarctic Territory.

 

Kuehne+Nagel reports that all Chilean ports will be closed from 30 July until further notice.

 

In Colombia, a red alert has been issued for the northeastern Chocó region, as its Pacific coast braces for potential tsunami waves. The government has ordered the immediate evacuation of beaches and low-tide lands.

A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on 30 July 2025, causing significant disruptions along the coasts.

 

The earthquake triggered a series of tsunami warnings and evacuation orders across Japan, the US West Coast, and parts of the Pacific.

 

According to media reports, waves up to four metres high were reported in the region, sweeping vessels from their moorings.

 

In Japan, over 900,000 residents in 133 municipalities along the Pacific coast were ordered to evacuate, with officials recalling the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

 

In addition, the US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for dangerous waves within the next three hours along the coasts of Russia, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii, with a tsunami watch in effect for Guam and Micronesia.

 

In California, officials warned residents of potential tsunami waves.

 

Meanwhile, CNN reports that the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Panama, and Taiwan also issued tsunami advisories, warnings, and watches.
