According to a report by Marine Traffic, French-flagged container vessel CMA CGM Petra suffered a fire incident in one of the cargo holds while transiting the Strait of Malacca towards Lamu, Kenya, on 23 August 2026.
The fire was subsequently contained by the salvage team, and no crew injuries or pollution have been reported. However, salvage operations remain ongoing.
Seaexplorer data shows that the 8048-TEU vessel is currently in waters off Penang, Malaysia. As of 1 September 2026, CMA CGM Petra had not berthed and had missed its scheduled call at Colombo.
CMA CGM Petra was operating on the KILIMA service, with scheduled calls at Colombo, Lamu, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. Cargo loaded at Qingdao, Nansha and Singapore for East African destinations may be affected by the incident.
