Heavy rainfall disrupts operations at Chittagong Port, Bangladesh

Operations at Chittagong (Chattogram) Port and nearby container freight and depot facilities in Bangladesh are facing disruptions following continued rainfall and waterlogging in the city.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has maintained Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at the maritime port of Chattogram, while the warning also applies to the ports of Mongla and Payra.

According to the weather authorities, a well-marked low-pressure system remains influential over the North Bay and neighbouring areas, creating conditions that may affect maritime ports, the North Bay and adjacent coastal districts of Bangladesh.

Strong monsoon conditions continue over the North Bay.

At Chattogram, accumulated water in parts of the city has affected port-related operational areas. Current impacts include lower cargo handling productivity, disruptions to cargo receiving processes, stuffing activities and container transportation.

Transport-related challenges linked to the flooding are also contributing to labour shortages. Delays are possible for export cargo processing, gate-in procedures and compliance with vessel cut-off requirements.

Weather forecasts indicate that rainfall is expected to continue in the Chattogram area through 08 July 2026, with further intermittent rain anticipated during the rest of the week.
