Several regions in Bangladesh witnessed serious floods yesterday, 28 April, due to heavy rainfall.
According to a Reuters report, the upstream flows from India caused river levels to rise sharply across northeastern Bangladesh, placing extensive areas at risk of flooding during the peak summer rice harvest.
Officials said the situation has been intensified by pre-monsoon rainfall combined with strong upstream water flows.
Persistent rain, thunderstorms and strong winds have affected agricultural areas, where farmers have entered flooded fields to harvest crops that are partially submerged.
Urban areas have also been impacted, with widespread waterlogging reported in major cities, including Dhaka and Chittagong, likely impacting port operations at Chittagong (Chattogram) Port.
In these locations, flooded roads have slowed traffic and disrupted daily activities. Officials noted that the situation has added pressure to already-strained drainage systems.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall over the coming days. The alert highlighted the likelihood of continued severe weather affecting river systems and surrounding low-lying areas.
