Worker killed after containers topple at Nhava Sheva terminal, India, during severe weather

Local news reported that one worker was killed and another was injured in an incident at India's Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal (NSFT) within the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Uran.

According to Hindustan Times, the accident occurred during the handling of empty containers at the terminal on Monday, 6 July.

Four empty containers fell from a shipping vessel anchored at the container berth during heavy rain and gusty winds. Reports claim that the containers fell from the 4235-TEU boxship Dalian.

The containers reportedly landed on two trucks, including a vehicle used for collecting hazardous waste. The affected workers were carrying out waste oil removal activities from anchored vessels when they became trapped beneath one of the fallen containers.

At the time of the incident, the JNPA suspended operations to launch an investigation and allow police procedures.

The incident occurred as Navi Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Monday night.

Flooding and traffic disruption were reported in several areas, including Sanpada, Juinagar, Vashi and the APMC market, while congestion affected the Thane-Belapur Road and parts of the Sion-Panvel Highway.
