Tanzania accelerates Dar es Salaam port expansion to ease vessel congestion

Tanzania is advancing a series of infrastructure projects to expand capacity and improve operations at Dar es Salaam port as cargo volumes continue to rise.

The Tanzania Ports Authority is directing a significant share of its infrastructure programme towards modernising the port.

Current operations are constrained by berth limitations, with an average of 20 vessels waiting offshore each day.

Expansion plans include the construction of four new berths numbered 12 to 15, alongside two additional berths with a combined length of 500 metres.

Two further berths are also under development in the Malindi area as part of a broader initiative to increase the total number of berths from 12 to 22.

Additional port upgrades include the development of oil reception and storage facilities and the establishment of a rail terminal within the port.

These measures are intended to support improved cargo handling and strengthen connectivity with inland transport networks.

Rail connectivity is a central component of the programme as well.

Construction of a standard-gauge railway link to the port is progressing, together with the Malindi marshalling yard for transferring cargo to freight trains.

Cargo transport between Malindi and the Morogoro cargo terminal via the railway is expected to begin in June 2026.

The overall programme combines berth expansion, logistics corridor development between the port and Chalinze, and enhanced intermodal links to address pressure on port infrastructure and surrounding road networks.
