On Friday, 1 May, two container vessels were involved in a collision at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port in Bangladesh.
The incident occurred at around 09:30 local time and involved the Singapore-flagged Maersk Chattogram and the Bangladesh-flagged HR Turag.
Preliminary port information confirmed that both vessels sustained structural damage. Maersk Chattogram suffered damage to its stern and starboard side, while HR Turag was also affected.
Import cargo discharge operations were initiated after the incident. However, export cargo loading on both vessels was temporarily suspended.
While these operational changes were implemented, there were no reports of damage to any containers.
Following the collision, both vessels remained at anchor for nearly two days. This pause was required to address safety considerations and to assess the extent of the damage sustained.
On 3 May, the Chattogram Port Authority transferred both vessels to the JCB jetty under special safety arrangements. The vessels are expected to undergo repairs before receiving clearance to resume operations.
Speaking to shipping media TradeWinds, a Maersk spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “We can confirm that there are no injuries, all the crew members are safe, and no pollution has been reported. There are also no reports of damage to any containers."
Data from seaexplorer shows that the 2754-TEU Maersk Chattogram is deployed on the SH2-SH2 service connecting the Indian subcontinent with Asia.
