Rotterdam Maasvlakte II rail capacity reduced during extended terminal works

Expansion activity from 01 July 2026 to mid-2027 coincides with multiple Dutch rail disruptions affecting Venlo connections and increasing transit times

Rotterdam Maasvlakte II rail capacity reduced during extended terminal works

From 1 July 2026 through to approximately mid-2027, APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam will reduce its rail handling capability due to infrastructure works.

Throughout this period, cargo volume transported via rail will be subject to restrictions.

According to a notice published by Hapag-Lloyd, "rail handling capacity will be limited, fixed time slots will apply, and longer lead times may occur."

Similarly, the German rail services operator Contargo mentioned that rail-linked services to and from the Dutch terminal are likely to be affected by these limitations.

Contargo highlighted possible alternative solutions, including consolidation of freight volumes, rerouting of operations, and increasing barge capacity.

Other rail disruptions in July include rail services to hinterland locations and rail corridors in the country, as reported by Hutchison Ports.

Engineering works between Eindhoven and Venlo Gekkengraaf will be in effect from 11 to 20 July 2026. A further phase of works along the Breda to Tilburg corridor will run from 28 July to 9 August 2026.
