Port workers in the Netherlands are set to take part in a nationwide strike on 4 September after labour union FNV Havens announced a coordinated stoppage across the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Zeeland.
The union said no ships will be handled between 11:15 and 19:00 local time on that day.
As a result, activities including loading, unloading, securing, towing and cargo checks may face significant delays during the action.
According to the union, the strike forms part of wider union efforts opposing the Dutch government's proposed €6.5 billion reduction in social security spending.
Trade unions have been campaigning against planned changes affecting unemployment and disability benefits and have called for the proposals to be withdrawn.
The union argues that the proposed measures would weaken those protections for workers across the Netherlands.
FNV Havens further stated that its members had already expressed a willingness to take industrial action during a general members' meeting held on 31 March, which was attended by more than 700 port workers.
