Port and labour unions announce strikes affecting operations in Uruguay and Argentina

A 36-hour nationwide labour action has been confirmed in Argentina for Thursday, 9 April, following large-scale demonstrations earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, thousands of Argentines participated in an anti-austerity protest ahead of a planned nationwide strike.

While details about the impact of the strike on Argentinian ports are yet to be announced, the labour action will likely impact cargo transport across the country.

Commenting ahead of the strike, Héctor Daer, Secretary General of the CGT labour movement, stated: “The cost (of austerity) for vulnerable sectors is infinitely higher than is suggested by the monthly inflation index.”

This strike coincides with a 24-hour stoppage announced by the labour union representing port workers in the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay.

The strike will also take place on Thursday, 9 April, and will cause delays in terminal operations.
