Nationwide road blockades disrupt Bolivian transport networks

Major transport disruptions are anticipated across Bolivia on 6 May 2026, as the Unified Confederation of Rural Workers of Bolivia (CSUTCB) commences a scheduled nationwide road blockade.

The Tupac Katari Departmental Federation, a trade union representing rural agricultural and indigenous workers, has also confirmed its participation in these demonstrations.

The CSUTCB's primary objectives for this action include the reduction of salaries for elected officials, such as senators and deputies.

These demands come amid broader social unrest, including a 25-day march carried out by rural farmers, which reached central La Paz on 4 May 2026.

Logistics and travel are expected to be severely impacted, following a preliminary 24-hour national strike conducted by the Bolivian Confederation of Drivers' Unions on 5 May 2026.

That initial action, involving bus, minibus, and taxi operators, focused on issues regarding fuel shortages and quality.

The subsequent CSUTCB blockades are likely to target primary intercity highways, especially those connecting La Paz, Oruro, and Cochabamba.

Container transport to nearby ports in neighbouring Peru and Chile is expected to experience disruption as a result.
