Labour dispute disrupts operations at Uruguay's Montevideo container terminal

Recurrent union action over working conditions and automation halts truck services and leads to partial port shutdown

Labour dispute disrupts operations at Uruguay's Montevideo container terminal

Uruguay's principal container operator in Montevideo, Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP), is facing an ongoing labour dispute with its workforce union.

According to the news outlet Portal Portuario, the conflict led to a partial shutdown of the port on Monday, 29 June, for seven hours.

The disagreement centres on working conditions, including guaranteed shifts, pay, and the effects of automation.

These issues have triggered repeated strikes last month that continue to affect operations at the terminal, which handles around 80% of the country’s foreign trade.

Other news reports mentioned that the Ministry of Labour presented a formal proposal, establishing a schedule of negotiations for the next six weeks.

Despite this development, operations at the port are likely to remain restricted, with an impact on trucking operations in the country.
