Elbe Valley reconstruction to cause multiple closures impacting Central and Eastern European rail flows

METRANS announces upcoming rail infrastructure restrictions for early 2026

METRANS has informed customers of several upcoming infrastructure works that will impact rail operations across key Central and Eastern European corridors in early 2026.

While the German railway network is currently experiencing relatively stable conditions, with the exception of the ongoing closure of the Berlin–Hamburg line, the company warns that congestion, minor port terminal delays, and unexpected events continue to challenge daily operations.

As part of long‑term reconstruction efforts in the Elbe Valley, significant restrictions will affect services between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, the Balkans, and major northern ports, including Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, and Duisburg.

METRANS has confirmed the following scheduled closures:

9–12 January 2026: Complete closure in Dresden. Trains rerouted via Cheb/Schirnding, Horka, and partially via Passau.

The company has announced new restrictions as follows:

Starting 6 February 2026: Passau is expected to be inaccessible due to maintenance on the Nuremberg–Regensburg line.

4–16 February 2026: Complete closure in Dresden. Rerouting via Cheb/Schirnding and Horka.

21–26 February 2026: Partial closures at Kurort Rathen – Pirna and Bad Schandau Ost – Königstein.
