Update - 3 Feb: Vessel movement in the Bay of Biscay recovers, Portuguese transport affected by storm

Update: 03.02.2026

Weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay have allowed vessel movement in the region to improve. According to an update by Maersk, terminals resumed operations, but schedule delays are still to be expected.

A new series of severe weather is, however, expected on Wednesday, 4 February, reports Maersk. .

The impact will affect "crossings as well as terminal operations in the Western Mediterranean." A ripple effect is also expected on ports in Northern Europe.

Portugal faced a severe windstorm last week, causing severe disruption to transport infrastructure across central Portugal.

The storm damaged and blocked roads, caused power outages and affected railway lines in the Leiria region.

An advisory circulated by Danish carrier Maersk highlighted severe winter conditions in the South-West and Western Europe.

According to the liner, container terminals and depots in the region are experiencing reduced productivity as weather‑related challenges intensify, leading to extended waiting times for import and export cargo.

While Maersk did not mention specific ports, it reported that multiple facilities have temporarily stopped operations or are functioning at limited capacity.

Snow‑covered and icy roads are also slowing inland transport routes to and from terminals, resulting in further delays and increasing traffic congestion.

In the West Mediterranean, terminal operations have been suspended with no confirmed indication of when normal activity will resume. This pause has created additional pressure on cargo flows linked to North Europe.

Even if conditions improve, regions in North and South of Europe expect vessel bunching at several terminals over the next two weeks.

Although conditions in the Bay of Biscay had shown short‑lived improvement, forecasts suggest that the situation will deteriorate again throughout the week.
