THE Port of Los Angeles is looking to expand its container terminal to handle more cargo in the future.

The port is seeking proposals for the pre-development of Pier 500, a proposed new stand-alone container terminal along the Pier 400 Channel.

“For the first time in a generation, the Port of Los Angeles plans to build a new container terminal to meet global supply chain demand for decades into the future,” said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka.

Pre-development will also include the required environmental assessments under the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.

Seroka also referred to the new terminal as being the “cleanest terminal possible”.

Los Angeles envisions the new Pier 500 terminal to cover 200 acres, with two berths and 3,000 feet of new wharf.

The selected entity would enter into a public-private pre-development agreement with the port to scope the project’s financial feasibility, procure entitlements and handle other requirements needed before implementation and build-out of the project.

Pier 500 will allow for bigger ships to berth as it sits in natural deep water on the southern tip off the port’s terminal island.

The port identified a 124 acre submerged site adjacent to Pier 400 that will be used in the development of Pier 500. The site was built during the completion of Pier 400 in 2002.

Construction of Pier 500 is expected to take 10 years. Details on handling capacity were not disclosed.
