THE PORT of Baltimore has broken its container handling record, handling more than 1.1m teu in 2025.
The Seagirt Marine Terminal handled 1,113,309 teu last year, up by more than 300,000 teu in 2024 to surpass the record set in 2023 by 5,000 units.
The increase on 2024 is hardly surprising, considering the main shipping channel was closed for nearly three months following the collapse of the Francos Scott Key Bridge, after it was hit by Singapore-flagged containership Dali (IMO: 9697428).
But the record-breaking container handling figures are joined by impressive vessel handling numbers too. Last year the port berthed 2,223 vessels, up from the record of 2,137 set in 2023.
The port said it expects its container business to continue to grow too, after the number of weekly container services increased from 12 in 2024 to 15 in 2025.
A $518m project to modernise a 130-year-old tunnel will also allow double-stacked container trains to operate at the port and is expected to increase container throughput by 160,000 container per year.
