Arrest made following MSC boxship terror threat
MSC Lorena was in Belgium in the past month when a threat to detonate a bomb on board was received
11 January 2023 (Lloyd's List) - BELGIAN police have arrested a 22-year-old man following a threat to explode a bomb on a containership in the past month.
The suspect was arrested on January 10 on suspicion of threatening to undertake a terrorist crime. His identity and whereabouts have not been disclosed by the police, while further arrests have not been ruled out, according to a Lloyd’s List Intelligence report.
The 4,800 teu capacity MSC Lorena was on passage in the River Scheldt on December 21 from Dakar, Senegal, when a telephone call threatening to detonate a bomb on the vessel if it docked at Antwerp was reported to the Belgian police.
It was ordered to turn around and go to anchor off the Dutch coast at Wielingen North Anchorage, where it remained pending an investigation.
Following extensive searches, no explosives were found on board.
MSC Lorena eventually berthed at Antwerp for discharge and loading operations on December 29. To ensure the safety of the vessel and crew, authorities ordered the deactivation of the vessel's Automatic Identification System while its berth position remained a secret.
MSC Lorena was delivered to MSC in 2004 by South Korea’s DSME. It is insured by the UK Mutual Steamship Association and classed by DNV.
