Work stoppages expected at Finnish ports as strikes renew

Stevedoers at ports will strike for three days starting 14 February and until 17 February

Update: 12.02.2024

A new strike will commence in Finland this week, impacting multiple sectors in the country.

Stevedores, members of the Finnish Transport Workers Union (AKT), will take part in the strike for three days from 14 February at 6.00 am to 17 February at 6.00 am.

Union members intend to join the strikes nationwide against the government’s plans to weaken employee rights and to demand open, meaningful negotiations.

It is expected that the campaign in the stevedoring industry will stop operations at ports. Consequently, the loading and unloading of vessels will also be interrupted.

During the industrial action, containers cannot be picked up from or delivered to the ports.

According to Crisis24, multiple logistics centres will also be impacted, as around 10,000 people from the sector are set to participate.

Five affiliated unions of the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) have announced an industrial action for two days in February.

Political strikes oppose the Finnish government's plans, claiming they weaken employee rights and social security.

Air traffic will stop at all major airports in Finland for two days on 1 and 2 February 2024.

In addition to the air traffic strike, the Finnish Transport Workers' Union (AKT) has also announced large-scale strikes to affect almost all its business sectors, including operations in Finnish ports.

Impact on sea logistics

The strike in the stevedoring industry will interrupt the loading and unloading of vessels in Finnish ports from 6:00 am on 1 February until 6:00 am on 3 February.

Shipping companies have not yet announced changes to vessel schedules. However, containers cannot be picked up or delivered to the ports during the strike.

Air and road transport will also be impacted. Kuehne+Nagel anticipates flight cancellations, handling delays for air cargo and handling disruption of unaccompanied trailers at ports.

More information about the strike is available in our advisory. Do not hesitate to contact your Kuehne+Nagel representative for queries about your shipment.
