Vessel collision in Bonny Channel causes grounding and oil spill

Containership Maersk Valparaiso collided with a product tanker during manoeuvring operations in the Bonny Channel, Nigeria, on 20 May 2026.


The collision resulted in both ships running aground and disrupting port traffic, and an oil spill was reported following the incident.


Reports mention that both vessels sustained damage and are awaiting assessment and further investigation.


Five crewmembers onboard suffered varying degrees of injury and were evacuated by personnel for medical treatment.


Maersk Valparaiso was reported aground in the Bonny Inner Anchorage on 21 May before being refloated the following day. The vessel is now anchored at Onne Port pending further inspection and repairs.


Maersk has formally notified authorities, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is underway.
