General average has been declared on the Maersk Frankfurt which caught fire a week ago. The Indian Coast Guard is still working to extinguish the remaining small blazes.

Once containers are discharged from the vessel, they will not be released or delivered until cargo interests have made the necessary security arrangements through Richards Hogg Lindley, the general average adjusters.

Professional salvors are on board the vessel. They support the Indian Coast Guard in surveying the damage, developing a plan for the vessel's continued fire-fighting operation, and assisting with the evacuation.

Yesterday, Maersk confirmed to ShippingWatch that the fire on the container ship Maersk Frankfurt has not yet been extinguished.

This statement follows reports from Indian media, based on information from the Indian Coast Guard, claiming that the fire, which started last Friday off the coast of Goa, had been put out.

The Danish shipping line stated, “There is still a fire on board the ship, so according to our information, what the Indian Coast Guard posted on X is not accurate”.

The container vessel caught fire last Friday, approximately 100 nautical miles northwest of Goa in the Arabian Sea.

The incident resulted in the unfortunate death of one Philippine crew member.

Immediately after the fire erupted, the crew started initial firefighting efforts and alerted the Indian Coast Guard.
