As of Thursday morning, Hong Kong Observatory has classified the typhoon heading towards its coast as a super typhoon. The observatory has raised a Signal 8, which will stay in effect until Friday, 6 September.
According to Zoom Earth, Typhoon Yagi is currently in the northern part of the South China Sea, with wind speed reaching 240 km/h.
Despite the storm's uncertain trajectory, Yagi is expected to make landfall in the Strait of Hainan with wind speeds of 220 km/h during the afternoon of 6 September.
The area, from Hainan Island to the Southern Guangdong province to Hong Kong Island, is now preparing for the impact, said Reuters.
Schools will remain closed, and many flights will be cancelled or rerouted due to the storm, which could be the strongest in a decade.
For the ports in the area, several disruptions are expected:
- Hong Kong: Empty container pick-up will be suspended at 23:00 hours on 4 September.
- Shekou Container Terminal: Empty container pick-up and laden container delivery will be suspended at 23:00 hours on 4 September.
- Yantian International Container Terminal: Empty container pick-up will be suspended at 03:00 hours on 5 September.
Yagi will continue its path throughout 6 September, losing its strength in the Gulf of Tonkin and on the Vietnamese Coast (in the Ha Long Area) during the first hours of 7 September.
It's forecast to dissipate on 9 September.
