Transporters announce nationwide strike as supply chains grind to a halt

The All Pakistan Transport Federation, along with inter-city, inter-district and goods transport unions, has declared a complete strike on 19 December.

The protest aims to force the withdrawal of the recently introduced fine system, which unions claim imposes heavy penalties.

Leaders stated that goods and passenger transport from Khyber to Karachi will stop entirely, affecting bus, wagon and rail services, intra-city routes, markets, factories, banks, petrol stations, schools and supply chains.

“On December 19, Pakistan will be shut - completely shut,” said federation representatives Asif Khan, Lala Suhail and Tariq Khan.

While limited talks eased tensions in Punjab earlier this month, major transport bodies have rejected government assurances and confirmed the nationwide strike.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry raised concerns about the impact of the strikes on businesses.

The chamber noted that halted goods movement has already paralysed supply chains nationwide.

Access to the ports of Karachi and Muhammad Bin Qasim is likely to be affected by the strikes.
