Belawan port, Indonesia, faces delays as coastal flood warnings remain

Update: 01.12.2025

Kuehne+Nagel reports that Port operations at Belawan are gradually resuming, with carrier depots and container transport slowly lifting restrictions.

However, several vessels remain delayed in reaching the port, reflecting ongoing logistical challenges.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has announced an early warning for coastal flooding in North Sumatra.

The advisory is effective from 1 to 9 December 2025 and applies to Medan Belawan District, Medan Labuhan, and Medan Marelan.

Authorities cite high tide activity and other natural phenomena as the cause of potential flooding.

Forecasts indicate water levels exceeding 2.3 metres during the warning period, with peak tides expected to reach 2.7 metres.

The agency has cautioned that these conditions may disrupt port operations and daily activities in coastal areas.

The severe weather across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand caused widespread devastation, with casualties exceeding 400 people.

In North Sumatra, damaged roads and collapsed communication lines have isolated affected areas. Broken bridges, blocked routes, and limited heavy equipment have hampered rescue and recovery operations.

Kuehne+Nagel monitors the situation closely and will report updates as they become available.

The earthquake registered a magnitude between 6.5 and 6.6. Its epicenter was located near Simeulue Island, off the west coast of Northern Sumatra. The depth of the quake was reported to be between 25 kilometers and 57 kilometers, depending on agency readings.
