Update: 11.12.2024
According to local media, the Ports Association has announced it will implement a wage revision this week to meet the demands of Indian port workers.
A government official said that the issue that hindered reaching an agreement in September has recently been resolved.
Kuehne+Nagel reports that this positive development consequently averts the indefinite strike called by the workers across major ports.

No progress was reported today concerning the potential port strikes in India.
Port workers had threatened to start an indefinite strike on 17 December if their demands were not met by mid-December.
The planned strike by Indian port workers is expected to primarily affect the state-owned ports governed by the Indian Ports Association (IPA). IPA Member Ports include:
- Kolkata Port Trust
- Haldia Dock Complex
- Paradip Port Trust
- Visakhapatnam Port Trust
- V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust (Tuticorin)
- Cochin Port Trust
- New Mangalore Port Trust
- Mormugao Port Trust
- Mumbai Port Trust
- Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust
- Deendayal Port Trust
- Kamarajar Port Limited (formerly Ennore Port Limited)
However, several private ports and terminals, as well as non-IPA facilities, will likely remain unaffected as they operate independently. Here’s a list of ports and terminals that are not expected to be affected.
Private Ports and Terminals
- Mundra Port (Gujarat): Operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Limited, it is India’s largest private port.
- Hazira Port (Gujarat): Another Adani-operated facility specializing in container and bulk cargo.
- Krishnapatnam Port (Andhra Pradesh): Operated by Adani Ports, handles bulk and container cargo.
- Dighi Port (Maharashtra): Privately managed, handling general cargo and bulk.
- Kattupalli Port (Tamil Nadu): Operated by Adani Ports, focusing on containers and logistics.
- Gangavaram Port (Andhra Pradesh): Operated privately, specializing in bulk cargo like coal and iron ore.
Private container terminals operating within major state-owned ports under Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) may also be partially operational, depending on the involvement of state-employed dockworkers. Examples include:
- Gateway Terminals India (GTI) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (operated by APM Terminals)
- Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) at JNPT (operated by DP World)
- Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Private Limited (NSFT) at JNPT (a joint venture between JM Baxi Ports & Logistics and CMA Terminals)
- BMCT Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal at JNPT (operated by PSA)
- NSIGT Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Container Terminal at JNPT (operated by DP World)
- Kandla International Container Terminal (KICT) (operated by JM Baxi Ports)
- Adani Ennore Container Terminal at Kamarajar Port
- Chennai Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (operated by DP World)
Non-IPA Ports
Ports managed by state maritime boards (like Gujarat Maritime Board) or other independent authorities may not be affected, including:
- Pipavav Port (Gujarat)
- Navlakhi Port (Gujarat)
These private and non-IPA facilities will likely continue normal operations, ensuring some continuity for cargo handling during the strike.
