Iran introduces transit authority and new shipping rules in Strait of Hormuz

Persian Gulf Strait Authority mandates permits, toll payments, and detailed vessel data as new framework coincides with reported progress towards lifting transit restrictions

Iran introduces transit authority and new shipping rules in Strait of Hormuz

Iran has introduced a new framework regulating vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, requiring ships to comply with updated procedures set by national authorities.

The measures apply to vessels intending to transit the waterway and outline specific requirements that must be met prior to approval.

Under the system, ships receive formal notifications via email from an entity linked to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.

These communications detail navigation rules and compliance obligations, which must be fulfilled before a transit permit is issued.

The Persian Gulf Strait Authority has been established as a government body responsible for approving vessel transits and collecting tolls. It has positioned itself as the sole authority authorised to grant permission for passage through the strait.

Ships seeking approval are required to submit detailed information, including ownership, insurance, crew data, and their intended route. The framework makes transit authorisation and toll payment mandatory prior to sailing.

The creation of the authority follows reports that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement on terms to end the conflict, which would include lifting restrictions related to transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Commenting on the development, shipping expert Lars Jensen stated that this delineation places three UAE ports within the claimed zone.

He noted that any escalation based on the claimed control area could significantly worsen the supply chain situation.

Seaexplorer shows that the designated area includes 39 vessels with a combined capacity of 148,573 TEU, including four CMA CGM ships and three MSC vessels.
