Due to extensive construction work, multiple rail network closures in July are set to impact the Port of Hamburg.
According to German media DVZ, rail access to the western terminals will be closed from 11 July at 07:00 to 15 July at 07:00 local time.
This closure will affect the Altenwerder, Burchardkai, Eurogate container terminals, and the Hansaport bulk terminal.
The closure is related to a construction project involving building a tunnel and structure for the new A26-West motorway under the port railway tracks.
"The HHLA railway subsidiary is one of the largest players in rail-based seaport hinterland transport and typically handles around 150 trains at the terminals affected by the closure during such a period," Roger Mahler, Managing Director of Metrans Rail, tells DVZ.
Mahler estimates that at least 13,500 TEU would not be transported during closures.
Other stakeholders estimate that up to 20,000 TEU in imports and around 15,000 TEU in exports will be affected.
Additionally, earlier in April, Maersk announced that the Port of Hamburg rail terminal will be closed between 4 and 8 July.
The carrier mentioned that the exact days of closure are not yet confirmed, but it added that no rail transport to or from the Port of Hamburg will be operationally feasible during these days.
