Columbian truck drivers began nationwide strikes this week to protest the government's decision to phase out fuel subsidies and increase diesel fuel prices.
Protests have intensified over the last two days, and roadblocks at key highways have severely disrupted transportation and logistics. According to local sources, 136 road closures have been reported across the country so far.
Due to the lack of truck drivers and roadblocks, local Kuehne+Nagel sources expect cargo accumulation at ports and airports, which could cause significant challenges at these facilities.
In addition, major cities such as Bogotá, Medellin, and Cali face the threat of limited food and fuel supplies.
The protests have also affected everyday life in Colombia. School and university classes were cancelled in Bogota, and public transport was severely disrupted this week.
Although negotiations are ongoing, the strikes are expected to continue until the government and transport unions reach an agreement.
