A CMA CGM containership collided with a crane at the Port of Livorno, Italy, on 22 October, knocking it off its rails.
The ship, CMA CGM Pointe-Noire, was approaching its berth at the Darsena Toscana Terminal when it hit a ship-to-shore crane that had been parked on the quay for maintenance.
According to a report by Marine Traffic, the ship's bridge/superstructure hit the boom of the crane, causing the incident.
The collision forced the crane from its rails and caused structural damage, leaving it leaning towards the water and inoperable.
Early assessments indicated that the Pointe Noire sustained only minimal damage, including reported dents.
Following the incident, the vessel was detained pending inspections. An investigation has also been launched to establish the sequence of events and determine any liability.
The affected equipment is one of six Paceco cranes operating at the port. Immediately after the accident, only two of the six were reported to be usable, resulting in a major bottleneck in the port’s immediate container-handling capacity.
CMA CGM Pointe-Noire is a 8048-TEU ship currently deployed on the Intra-South America service GCO.
