Asia-North America capacity largely unchanged in August
Linerlytica reports carriers are hesitant to withdraw capacity on the Transpacific trade despite the softening demand and the uncertainty surrounding the 1 August 2025 tariff deadline.
"Average capacity in July remains at over 360,000 teu to the West Coast, and over 215,000 teu to the East Coast with only minor reductions planned in August," noted the report.
Further analysis dated 14 July 2025 shows that capacity deployed on the Far East to East Coast of North America route rose by 5.1% month-on-month, while capacity to the West Coast increased by 7%.
Sea Intelligence, an analytics firm that tracks weekly capacity deployment, observed notable week-to-week fluctuations.
On the Asia-North American West Coast trade route, weekly capacity increases by 18% in week 29 (mid-July) and falls by 12.7% the following week, before sharply increasing to 387,800 TEU in week 35 (late August). However, for August weeks 31 to 34, capacity adjustments range from -6.1% to 2.8%.
On the East Coast trade route, capacity drops sharply by 25% in week 31 (end of July) to 203.700 TEU and rebounds significantly to 273,100 TEU in week 36 (early September). Similar to the West Coast, for weeks 33 to 35 in August, capacity changes range from -6.2% to 4.8%.
These fluctuations in weekly capacity may indicate that carriers are taking a cautious approach to adjustments on these routes, opting instead to remain flexible amid an uncertain tariff environment and evolving demand trends.
