Portugal-flagged containership Mississippi, operated by carrier ZIM, experienced a significant container stack collapse on the morning of 9 September.

According to news reports, the incident occurred in the Port of Long Beach, where approximately 67 containers fell into the water.

The collapse happened as crews began releasing the straps holding the containers down, causing a domino effect of falling containers.

Emergency crews, supported by the U.S. Coast Guard, quickly deployed vessels and aircraft to contain the incident and survey the affected area.

The contents of the lost containers remain unclear.

Officials at the port stated that the Mississippi was arriving from China with a full load of goods destined for various U.S. retailers.

Following the accident, operations at Terminal G were suspended, and the Coast Guard established a 500-yard safety zone around the affected area.

The Mississippi is a 2024-built vessel with a carrying capacity of 5,500 TEU. The situation remains unstable onboard the ship, and further container losses are possible.
