Blizzard shuts major Northeast US terminals and halts regional cargo movements

A severe winter storm has disrupted transport and terminal activity across the Northeastern United States, with seven states declaring a state of emergency ahead of widespread blizzard conditions.

The system moved into the New York metropolitan area at midday Sunday, accompanied by forecasts of up to 24 inches of snow for some coastal areas.

Authorities issued travel bans in advance of deteriorating conditions, and several major marine facilities suspended activity.

All gates and operations at APM Terminals, Port Newark Container Terminal, Maher Terminals, Ports America, Port Liberty, and Red Hook Barge Terminal were closed.

APM stated in an update that the terminal would remain closed on Tuesday, noting that the earliest possible resumption of vessel operations would be Tuesday at 19:00.

Further south, the ports of Boston, Baltimore and Philadelphia experienced similar disruption, with the some terminals closed and others delaying their openings.

In addition, the storm has affected drayage and road‑based logistics across multiple states, where hazardous road conditions, restricted visibility, and ongoing snow‑clearing operations continue to limit mobility.

Transport providers and drayage operations are facing reduced equipment and driver availability, contributing to delays for both import and export movements.
