The National Union of Port Administration Workers (SNTAP) in Portugal has announced its intention to host several strikes in May and June. According to the statement from the union, the protests were announced after the government failed to make a wage proposal, which was promised back in January.

Taking part in the strikes are tug operators and pilots responsible for the movement of ships into and out of ports. Protests will begin this week and continue until the end of June at all ports in Portugal, including Lisbon, Setubal, Sines and Leixoes.

Announced strike dates are as follows:

  1. From 00.00 hrs on 25 May until 24:00 hrs on 26 May
  2. From 00.00 hrs on 30 May until 24.00 hrs on 1 June
  3. From 00.00 hrs until 24.00 hrs on the 5, 9,12,16,19, 23, 26, and 30 June.

According to the SNTAP's announcement, a minimum service level at the ports will be maintained during these dates. Should this be the case, Kuehne+Nagel expects an increase in berthing congestion rather than disruption of all port activity.
