Work stoppages at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Rotterdam

Significant gaps in collective labour agreement talks lead to heighten congestion

by Priya Radünzel, SeaNewsEditor

Workers at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II downed tools indefinitely yesterday evening, 4 June.

According to sources, collective labour agreement negotiations are fully underway. However, the gap between the current offer and the trade unions' demands remains significant, resulting in the present situation.

The work stoppages will further delay vessel and container movements.

This comes at a time when congestion and disruptions at the APM terminal and neighbouring terminals are extremely high, with no sign of abating until the end of the peak season.

Such labour strikes could prolong the recovery of these ports and others in Northern Europe. A quick resolution would be needed to minimise the impact on shipping in the region.
