The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) has announced its intention to initiate a nationwide strike on 30 September 2025.
The strike is in response to the government's failure to address over a year's worth of unpaid salary arrears, dating back to October 2024.
The union has also planned a demonstration in Accra, which will proceed from the Ministry of Transport to the headquarters of the Trades Union Congress.
In a letter to the government, the union described the situation as causing "grave hardship" to the workers.
Despite assurances from the Ministry of Transport that the outstanding salary arrears will be resolved, the RWU remains firm in its decision to proceed with the strike.
The planned strike and demonstration are expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in Accra, with multiple labour organisations to take part.
According to local news, Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa workers could participate in the strike.
