Casablanca port has been closed since last week following intense storms and heavy rainfall. The shutdown is expected to extend this week, as more rain is forecast today.
On Sunday, 14 December, an hour of torrential rain triggered widespread flooding in the Atlantic coastal city of Safi, situated approximately 300 kilometres south of Rabat.
Muddy water inundated numerous homes and shops, swept away vehicles and severed access to several roads.
The national weather service has warned of further downpours on Tuesday, with conditions likely to worsen across the country. Social media accounts shared videos of floodwaters carrying debris and vehicles through city streets.
As a result, transport links have been severely affected, cutting off routes to and from Casablanca.
Authorities have not indicated when normal operations will resume, which remain subject to weather conditions.
