Rail disruptions in Italy halt Genova Marittima traffic and divert La Spezia-Melzo services

A derailment, planned maintenance and urgent infrastructure works trigger closures, capacity limits and potential delays across key freight corridors

Rail disruptions in Italy halt Genova Marittima traffic and divert La Spezia-Melzo services

Rail operations serving Genova Marittima have been interrupted following a wagon derailment at the terminal entrance.

Authorities have halted all incoming and outgoing train movements, and no timetable has yet been issued for the reopening of the line.

This suspension adds to the already planned rail disruption between 27 February and 03 March, when maintenance works in Parco Rugna will stop rail traffic to and from Genova Marittima.

Further operational pressure is expected as new infrastructure works have been announced on the railway connection between La Spezia and Melzo.

According to the communication, the project involves upgrading the Genova Voltri–Genova Brignole line. Genova Brignole station will be unavailable from 16 February to 29 March 2026, resulting in the full rerouting of trains from La Spezia to Melzo.

Under these measures, all affected rail services will be diverted via the Pontremolese line. This route change introduces a substantial restriction on maximum capacity, reducing the availability of space for shipments during the works period.
