Ports in southern India and Sri Lanka adapt operations following Cyclone Ditwah

Maritime terminals in southern India and Sri Lanka have faced operational challenges in the past few days due to adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Ditwah

The cyclone hit the region between 27 and 28 November, bringing high winds and heavy rain. The cyclone was later downgraded to a depression, but heavy rain is still forecast for India's Tamil Nadu region.

On 1 December 2025, the Port of Kattupalli suspended all operations, including vessel berthing. Port operations later resumed but remain disrupted due to incessant rain on 2 December.

In Sri Lanka, Colombo Port suspended operations at the height of the storm on Thursday, 27 November, but later resumed planned schedules, albeit with delays.

Pilot movements recommenced on Saturday morning, 29 November, allowing vessels to line up for berths.

Shipping sources in Colombo suggested that normal vessel window schedules and cargo operations could take up to a week to resume.

Meanwhile, operations at Hambantota port are proceeding as usual, but are subject to weather conditions.

Cargo movement within the harbour was described as manageable, although landside access remained congested.

According to a Lloyd's List report, the Sri Lankan port authority is facing challenges in getting workers from their homes to the port because of flooded roads, adding challenges to backlog-clearing efforts.

Latest seaexplorer data shows that the 7-day average waiting time for Colombo is around 2 days, and there are 13 vessels waiting to berth.
