Poland’s border crossings with Germany, Swiecko and Gubinek, were blocked today by farmers who continue to protest against EU agricultural rules.
According to a police spokesperson, the blockades started on Sunday and are scheduled to continue until Wednesday. Mass protests are also planned on the day across the country.
The police added that the only possibility for trucks in the Lubusz region travelling to Germany was to go to Olszyn, reports Reuters. While cars could pass through the remaining crossings in the region.
Although the European Commission adjusted a series of rules impacting the industry, Polish farmers further demand the re-imposition of customs duties on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.
Last week, farmers in Belgium blocked access to three ports, including the Port of Antwerp.
Mass protests in other parts of Europe
In addition to cross-border blockades, farmers have participated in mass marches in Spain this week.
Farmers affiliated with the Union of Farmers and Livestock Unions in Spain conducted a tractor protest through central Madrid yesterday, 17 March.
Similarly, Slovenian farmers plan to march in Ljubljana tomorrow, 19 March.
Some 2,000 tractors are expected to join the demonstrations, taking off from the city’s Republic Square and driving to protest in front of government ministries.
